How to take care of your belt

September 29, 2016

In this article, we are going tell you how to look after your leather belt so it will serve you for a long time and still look fine.

There are two main parts of your belt: leather girdle (which is also called leather strap), and a buckle.

Firstly, you need to take into account the fact that if belt holds your pants for a long time, it will take shape of your body. So if you decide to shorten your belt, it can stretch a bit.

The only enemy of leather belt is water. You mustn’t launder or wash your belt in running water, you also should avoid any direct contact with water or even getting your belt slightly wet. If such a mishap occurred (you got under a pouring rain, for example), the only thing you should do is to wipe your belt with a piece of tatter and let your belt dry without using fan, dryer, blowtorch, etc.

In case you have laundered your belt (we’ve done it several times), result may be unpredictable, most likely, your belt will become deformed and all the stamps may become unclear or even disappear.

Sure, it will still hold your pants, but it will never have the same look.

If you need to clean your belt, remember few simple rules:

  1. Remove the stain as soon as possible in order to prevent penetration of dirt into pores.
  2. Clean your belt with special skin-cleansing products.
  3. In extreme cases, you can use mild soap solution.
  4. After cleaning, let your belt dry by itself.
  5. Do not iron your belt, for God’s sake!

It is much simpler with buckle. Since buckles are casted out of brass and there is no additional covering, the only thing that may happen with it - oxidation or darkening. In other words, places that were bright gold, may fade. If you like vintage look, you don’t need to do anything, but if you want your buckle to shine, just polish it with a sponge that comes with our belt.

That’s all! Good luck to you and your belt!
